Plenary description

Despite decades of focus on stress management and work-life balance in law schools and the profession, issues of ill-being, distress, anxiety and dissatisfaction continue to burden law students and lawyers. To aggressively address this problem, in recent years, Professor Larry and Theresa Krieger have taught a wholly new paradigm to shift daily experience from stress to joy in their Transformational Leadership for Lawyers course. Students broadly document the efficacy of this new approach.

This presentation is drawn from that course. We briefly show why stress management and work-life balance have not sufficed, and set forth two summary steps to break the hold of stress on law students and lawyers: 1) learning to see life in terms of joy instead of stress, and 2) learning to be happy before striving for achievements (i.e. happiness without dependence on outside conditions or events). The session will emphasize active learning to provide attendees a taste of these experiences -- freedom from stress, and happiness without cause (feeling joy for no reason) and to inspire engagement with this approach to professional well-being, which could also be a unit in courses relating to the legal profession, professional identity or responsibility, and professionalism.
