Thanks!

Institute for Law Teaching and Learning Summer Conference
“Back to Basics: Timeless Principles and New Possibilities in Law Teaching”
June 17-20, 2026
at
University of Arkansas Little Rock Bowen School of Law
The Institute for Law Teaching and Learning invites proposals for conference workshop presentations that revisit foundational pedagogical practices in legal education. As legal educators innovate to meet the challenges of new bar exams and to adjust for the capacities of artificial intelligence, it is essential to reaffirm our commitment to effective teaching. This conference explores how timeless teaching principles can guide our thoughtful innovations, and how new challenges present opportunities to better achieve our core educational goals.
The conference theme is intentionally broad, designed to encompass a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to:
· Core principles of effective pedagogy in legal education
· Strategies for integrating technology while maintaining pedagogical integrity
· Digital tools for achieving traditional teaching goals
· Engaging diverse learning styles and backgrounds in the classroom
· Techniques for fostering critical thinking and analytical skills
· The role of mentorship and support in student success
· Approaches to teaching in a rapidly evolving legal landscape
· Best practices for formative assessment and feedback
· Building resilience and adaptability in students amidst change
We encourage submissions that reflect on these themes and share innovative practices that honor the foundational elements of legal education while embracing the future.
Accordingly, the Institute invites proposals for 60-minute workshop presentations consistent with the conference theme. Each workshop presentation should include materials that participants can use during the workshop and when they return to their campuses. Presenters should model effective teaching methods by actively engaging the workshop participants. The Institute Co-Directors are glad to work with anyone who would like advice on designing their presentations to be interactive.
Additionally, the Institute, which publishes the peer-reviewed Journal of Law Teaching and Learning<https://pwteihzab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001iiAln0kMRgfolUnvXRKQ5JPrf7RjMCIVzxSKXiPuNEZ2nmTTOJ1JGInQUZx1mwWlRGWlCEDpaRbzah8N5xaw1WRXznWMSPvwv7ocdkVT5kesjWafiWkVgKUBHCkQU8rym24mtoKRkw6xpnoQKJEVoKN_uEwfydXfo9Z5qJbLWnTAGlR4I0NQqzHe1wPAZKe1&c=2-Gpjyo5UwYz1cmv4_Luc8bJohYvcaBzihpzH8GSytHx8JlTuNqQJg==&ch=3eUomsVgyyegA5Rct7fpkGpuXn5jpARdzNzSDzxB3-lJRc96iS0Hkw==>, seeks to support scholarship of teaching and learning and therefore invites proposals for a scholarly works in progress session that will be held in conjunction with the conference. This workshop will provide a unique collaborative environment for scholars to receive feedback from other professors. Participants will work in small groups to give suggestions, ask questions, and offer input on the papers presented. The workshop organizers strongly encourage scholarship submissions that are in any stage—idea outline, work-in-progress, or nearly complete and ready to submit.
To be considered for the conference or the scholarly works in progress, proposals should be one page, single-spaced, and include the following information:
· Name, school affiliation, and email address of any presenters;
· Nature of your proposal—workshop presentation or scholarly work in progress;
· If proposing a workshop presentation:
· Title of the presentation
· A short description of the workshop presentation, including its goals and methods;
· A description of the teaching techniques the presenter will use to engage workshop participants and make the workshop interactive or a request for assistance in brainstorming ideas for making the presentation interactive;
· If proposing a works in progress for the scholarship session:
· A short description of your scholarly work;
· Your best guess as to what form it will take by the middle of May (outline, early stage work-in-progress, nearly complete draft).
The proposal deadline is Friday, February 6, 2026. Submit proposals via email to Emily Grant, emily.grant at washburn.edu<mailto:emily.grant at washburn.edu>.
