INDONESIA:

Accused Bali killer Noor Ellis could face death penalty over ordered hit on
Australian husband Robert Ellis

The Indonesian woman accused of the "pinky swear" murder of her Australian
husband Robert Ellis faces charges carrying the death penalty.

Julaikah Noor Aini, known as Noor Ellis, is accused of plotting the murder of
the 60-year-old and paying 5 accomplices to carry out the task last October. Mr
Ellis' body was dumped in a rice field wrapped in plastic and fabric. His
throat had been slit.

Police yesterday handed over dossiers containing evidence against all 6
accused. Their trial is expected to begin in 20 days and all 6 face charges
carrying the death penalty.

Noor Ellis previously confessed to hiring the hitmen and paying them 150
million rupiah ($A14,200) because she was unhappy in her relationship.

"She did it out of stress and being hurtful because she felt unappreciated as a
wife," her lawyer Ketut Suwega Arya Dauh told reporters this week.

"We're ready to defend her in the trial."

The pair had been married for 25 years and had 2 sons together. Both boys now
live in Perth.

But Mrs Ellis is expected to tell a story in court about her troubled marriage
and Mr Ellis??? infidelity.

News.com.au previously reported Noor Ellis told police she made a "pinky swear"
with the ringleader saying she wanted her husband of 25 years killed, but not
in a too "sadistic" fashion.

Police in November forced the 6 accused, including an emotional Mrs Ellis, to
re-enact the murder at multiple crime scenes in Bali. The re-enactment involved
Mrs Ellis, the 2 maids, and 3 of the men arrested for carrying out the murder.
Mrs Ellis showed police how she paid the boyfriend of one of her maids through
the window of a car.

Police say the "execution-style murder" involved a fatal wound to the throat
and several bruises around the head. Forensic teams said Mr Ellis' hands and
feed were tied and his throat was slashed 3 times.

"One of the wounds was fatal, but he also had several bruises around his head,
suggested he had been knocked to the ground before receiving the fatal throat
wound," senior officer Ida Bagas Putu Alit said.

Mrs Ellis' lawyer told reporters this week she regretted the crime. She is
expected to be moved to Bali's Kerobokan jail to await trial.

Bali 9 duo set to be executed together, Indonesia says

Indonesia will execute 6 death row prisoners, starting on Sunday, the
attorney-general has announced.

4 men and 2 women, imprisoned in three locations in Java, will be shot by
firing squad, HM Prasetyo says.

Among them are foreign drug offenders who are citizens of Malawi, Vietnam and
Brazil.

The remaining prisoners are two Indonesians and one man of uncertain
citizenship who was born in Papua.

2 Australians on death row in Bali, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, are not
among the group but are on a list of 20 prisoners whose execution could follow.

Sukumaran's claim for clemency has been rejected in line with President Joko
Widodo's stance on drug offenders.

Chan has yet to receive notice of his rejection.

The attorney-general says the pair will be dealt with together.

"When a crime is committed by more than one person the execution must be
conducted at the same time," he told reporters.

"So Myuran will wait for his turn."

Asked if he had been under any pressure from foreign governments including
Australia, Mr Prasetyo said: "so far, none".

As plans for the 6 executions go forward, legal argument continues over how
many requests can be filed for an appeal called a judicial review.

2 death row prisoners last year requested an additional judicial review.

The attorney-general said for the 6 set for executions, "All their judicial
aspects have been fulfilled".

He didn't know if the 2 requesting another appeal were in the group.

Mr Prasetyo said the executions were in line with Mr Joko's determination to
crack down on drug crime, which the government claims kill up to 40 Indonesians
daily.

6 INDIVIDUALS FACE IMMINENT EXECUTION FOR DRUG CRIMES

Six people are scheduled to be executed in Indonesia on 18 January. Five of
them are foreign nationals and all have been convicted of drug trafficking, an
offense which does not meet the threshold of the "most serious crimes" for
which the death penalty can be imposed under international law.

The Attorney General of Indonesia announced today that six individuals, an
Indonesian national and five foreign nationals, all convicted of and sentenced
to death for drug-related offenses are going to be executed on 18 January 2015.
According to the Attorney General their names are Rani Andriani alias Melisa
Aprilia (Indonesian), Daniel Enemuo (Nigerian), Ang Kiem Soei (Dutch), Tran Thi
Bich Hanh (Vietnamese), Namaona Denis (Nigerian) and Marco Archer Cardoso
Moreira (Brazilian).

Five of them are reportedly going to be executed on Nusakambangan Island while
Tran Thi Bich Hanh is to be executed in Boloyali district, both in Central
Java.

Death sentences in Indonesia are carried out by firing squad. The prisoner has
the choice of standing or sitting and whether to have their eyes covered, by a
blindfold or hood. Firing squads are made up of 12 people, three of whose
rifles are loaded with live ammunition, while the other nine are loaded with
blanks. The squad fires from a distance of between five and 10 metres.

In December 2014, it was reported that the President would not grant clemency
to at least 64 individuals who have been sentenced to death for drug-related
crimes and that there were plans to execute all of them. Drug-related offenses
do not meet the threshold of the "most serious crimes" for which the death
penalty can be imposed under Article 6(2) of the International Covenant on
Civil and Political Rights, to which Indonesia is a State Party. No executions
were carried out in Indonesia in 2014, and 20 executions are reportedly
scheduled for 2015. There are at least 130 people under death sentence in the
country.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Please write immediately in English, Indonesian or your own language:

* Urging the authorities to immediately halt plans to execute the six death row
prisoners;

* Calling on them to establish a moratorium on all executions with a view to
abolishing the death penalty and to commute all death sentences to terms of
imprisonment;

* Pointing out that the decision to resume executions has set Indonesia against
the global trend towards abolition of the death penalty and the country's own
progress in this area.
