Hannah Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2011 9:26 AM To: LITIGATEDV at MAIL.AMERICANBAR.ORG Subject: [CDVLAW] Home Alone - Assessing Readiness - Helpful Checklists and Resources The topic researched most often on my Blog is whether or not children can or should be left home alone. Parents often need information either (a) because it's summer and the kids are home from school and/or (b) there's an active divorce case or modification proceeding and one parent wants to know if the issue may be against him/her or against the other parent. Parents often Google a search query something like this: "How old should a child be before he can be left home alone?" As family lawyers, we might be sending out periodic newsletters to our clients or simply counseling them on how to proceed. Thus, the information in a series of blog articles may be something for you to have on hand to provide to a client. Of course, there is no simple one-size-fits-all answer. This decision is complicated because much depends upon the individual child and also family dynamics. The issue becomes more complicated if there are younger siblings. Is the oldest child ready to stay home alone and to be "in charge of" the younger children?
