FAMILY LAW: Balancing Interests and Pursuing Priorities
Edited by
Lynn Wardle & Camille Williams

This new and interesting book is a collection of 85 scholarly papers presented at the Twelfth World Conference of the International Society of Family Law (ISFL) in Salt Lake City, Utah, July 2005. These papers illustrate the range and diversity of interests that are affected by family law around the world, as well as the trend toward trying to balance and reconcile those interests.

The ISFL is the only global scholarly organization devoted to the academic study of family law from international and comparative perspectives. The Society has more than 550 members in more than 50 countries around the world.

Over 160 experts from 34 nations attended and presented scholarly papers to the conference panel. The papers were then edited down and 85 were selected that fairly represent the theme, message and discussions at the conference. They are organized within the book according to topic and then alphabetically within each topic heading.

Part 8: Conclusion

"Family law comprises vast aspects of family life. It concerns not only spouses or cohabitees, but also children. It is the result of national cultures, religion and political priorities, and the interaction of these factors...
I am often asked by colleagues why family law, which they so mistakenly think of being fenced within national boundaries, can bring me to so many parts of the world. We know the obvious answer: Family and family life is the core of society, and the legal framework of this core is confronted with the same issues all over the world. Its regulation may seek different solutions, based upon national and religious traditions. But it is my belief that the common goal is to give families the best opportunities to function to the best for parents and their children and to give fair settlements to those who break up their marriage or partnership. It is beyond doubt that there are different opinions on many issues, and also on which values the law should be based. We must respect opinion with which we disagree, but maintain the right to argue against them in the academic manner."
-Peter Lodrup, President, International Society of Family Law, Chapter 1
