From heinonline at lists.washlaw.edu Thu Sep 7 16:29:34 2006 From: heinonline at lists.washlaw.edu (HeinOnline Listserv) Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 12:29:34 -0400 Subject: [HeinOnline listserv] HeinOnline Enhancements Message-ID: Dear HeinOnline subscribers, As mentioned in the new content release announcement last week, below you will find information about several enhancements which will be launched within the next few days in HeinOnline ( http://heinonline.org) that will surely increase the efficiency of your research experience. A brief video has been created to highlight these new enhancements and can be found at: http://www.projectstreamer.com/users/wshein/HOLEnhancements/HOLEnhancements2006.html The first enhancement will be seen as soon as you log into HeinOnline. A new "Quick Links" page will be added that will allow researchers to enter a citation to a page within a particular library module and be delivered directly to the page in need. This new feature means that you will no longer need to first go into a particular library module, locate the Citation Navigator box, and then enter the citation to go to a page. However, if you would still like to go to a particular library module to browse its' contents, you may simply click on the name of the library module and you will be directed to the first page of that module, just as you traditionally would have been in the past. Additionally, one can search the library module by clicking on the "Search" button which will appear to the right of the library module name. This new feature should dramatically increase your access to content in HeinOnline. The next enhancement is something that the HeinOnline development team has been working on for a number of months...highlighted text on a page! As many of you know, HeinOnline is great for accessing content in its' original page format, but until now, locating a specific word or phrase on a page after conducting a full-text search involves reading through the page to locate the word or phrase. We are pleased to announce that we are currently adding the highlighted text feature across the entire collection of 21 million pages in HeinOnline. Because of the size of HeinOnline, we need to reprocess much of the content to allow this wonderful enhancement to work effectively in all HeinOnline library modules. Therefore, some of your current search results will provide the "highlighted text on the page" feature, and for those that do not, we will include a note at the bottom of the page to indicate the feature is not yet operational. In the coming months, we will continue to expand the highlighted text feature across the entire HeinOnline collection. The last enhancement to report also involves the search results in HeinOnline. Full-text search results lists will now include the section title and author (i.e. article title and author) where the search terms appear in addition to the page numbers and text surrounding the word or phrase being searched. This information will appear on the second level results list for a full-text search. This enhancement should help researchers to more readily narrow their search results based on the article title or author. The above certainly adds a great deal of new features that I hope you and your researchers will enjoy. Please forward this news along to as many people as possible within your organization. As always, your questions and comments are welcomed and can be sent to me at the email indicated below. Thank you for supporting HeinOnline. We look forward to adding more content and enhancing the product even more in the near future. Sincerely, Brian Jablonski Director, Marketing & Publications William S. We have received some very positive comments from subscribers, such as the following: "And we thought this couldn't get any better! How wonderful. You guys always outdo yourselves!" Special thanks to Anna Djirdjirian, Deputy Library Director of the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York for these kind words (her comment represents her own personal views, and is not an endorsement by her employer). Now, for the third year in a row, we are pleased to conduct our HeinOnline Bound Volume Survey to help everyone detect the trends in libraries around the world as a result of access to HeinOnline. Please take a moment to complete the following questions and send your responses to marketing at wshein.com. We would like to hear from you no later than September 29, 2006. As in the past, we will send the results to the list-serv for all to see. Please be assured that all responses will remain confidential. After conducting a quick Google search of HeinOnline recently, we found a considerable number of links to academic library websites that provide their own unique descriptions about HeinOnline to the patrons of the library. Descriptions we have seen range from simple text taken from some of our marketing literature (which is fine with us!) to very descriptive text that makes me wish I had such fantastic writing skills! So, we have decided to run a contest, asking you to submit links to your own websites that you feel best describes HeinOnline to your patrons. We will award the 3 "best" subscribing institutions with a credit memo valued at 50% of your current year's HeinOnline subscription price. The credit can be used towards future purchases of publications and reprints of William S. Hein & Co., Inc. Submissions may be submitted to marketing at wshein.com through 30 September 2006, and the winners will be announced in early October. Good luck, and we look forwarding to seeing all of your websites! Sincerely, Brian Jablonski Director, Marketing & Publications William S. All told, this release provides an additional 460,000 pages of new content to HeinOnline subscribers. Today, there are nearly 21.5 million pages of content in HeinOnline, and in the past year, HeinOnline has added nearly 4,000 volumes of new content. To put this into perspective, the number of new volumes added to HeinOnline in the past year equates to approximately 328 standard library shelves. So, for those subscribing to the entire collection of HeinOnline modules, your collection has expanded by 4000 volumes, yet your library has not needed to add any additional shelves to accommodate this growth. Another way to look at this statistic is that HeinOnline has provided you with an opportunity to remove the content now available in HeinOnline from your shelves in order to make room for other content. Finally, I would like to bring to your attention the release of several current issues in the journals below. More and more journals are asking us to include their current issues as published. We are pleased to do so, and ask all academic subscribers to encourage their own journal staff to contact us about adding their current issues to HeinOnline. Journal staff may send an email to me at bjablonski at wshein.com to find out more. Sincerely, Brian Jablonski Director, Marketing & Publications William S.
