As we certify these new and upgraded products, we include them on our Technical Requirements page (http://heinonline.org/front/front-tech). It has come to our attention that at least one HeinOnline subscriber is using Nitro PDF. After researching and testing Nitro PDF, we cannot certify this product for use with HeinOnline. We spoke to representatives of Nitro PDF, and unfortunately they do not plan to upgrade their product in the foreseeable future to work properly with scanned PDF images (which is the format of the pages in HeinOnline and countless other online image-based databases). Should you have any questions about this matter, please contact Daniel Rosati at drosati at wshein.com or (800)-828-7571 ext. 103 in North America, or (716) 882-2600 ext. 103 outside North America. The results of the three years can be found below. Some of the highlights of this year's survey include: 1) There has been a 6% increase over 2005 in terms of the libraries that are now moving content available in HeinOnline to remote storage. Today, 1 in 5 survey respondents (20%) are now moving content to remote storage; 2) Nearly 1 in 4 respondents are disposing of bound volumes when the content is available in HeinOnline, while an additional 14% of respondents are considering plans to discard of some of their bound volumes; 3) More than 25% of respondents have ceased binding the journals they hold in hardcopy when the content is available in HeinOnline. Considering the cost of binding, HeinOnline truly provides the opportunity to help libraries redirect some of their budget towards other needs of the library. Once again, thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to this year's survey. We hope the results will provide some insight into how some libraries are reacting with access to HeinOnline. If you have any questions about the survey or HeinOnline, please contact me. Sincerely, Brian Jablonski Director, Marketing & Publications William S. If your library has developed other cost or shelf-space saving solutions, we would appreciate sharing these ideas with other HeinOnline subscribers. Please list your solutions below, and let us know if we can share them with other subscribers: "Most of the material in HeinOnline is new to us. We are not a law library, but we do have a generalized government collection. We used to be housed in the same building as the state law library, but with our relocation to temporary quarters during a large renovation project, we will be using HeinOnline much more." "Cancellation of services available on HeinOnline, and those available through our flat rate agreements as well as other online services." "Online access to archival CFR will mean we don't need to keep archival print anymore, attorneys won't need to keep old volumes in their offices." (NOTE: CFR is coming this month to HeinOnline) "For us HeinOnline has allowed access to materials we were unable to have either due to cost or space limitations. Therefore, there is little duplication that would allow for the removal of titles from the library." "Our library will continue to retain on-site all the paper resources for as long as we have space and funding. This does not mean that we do not value Hein and the way it produces replicas of original pages, just that our library has a slightly different mission to many others." "If we collect a periodical, we *collect* it, meaning that we treat it like any other title in our collection with the same preservation and retention policies. One change we have made due to Hein Online is that we are much more selective of new periodicals; if HOL has it, we will tend to not purchase it ourselves." "Just that we are keeping some journals only until they appear in HeinOnline." "High cost journals which are available in HeinOnline and which meet other criteria are being eliminated." In response to #5: "The Law Library's titles will be moved to a remote storage facility which will include materials from all the libraries at UB" (University of Buffalo). In response to #5: "No, but would like to - it would be great if NELLCO sponsored this." "Nothing radical! - Mobile shelving, off-site storage, cancellations..." "I would not say that we have a 'solution' yet, but we expect to rely more heavily on HeinOnline in the future." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... HeinOnline ( http://heinonline.org) is pleased to announce the availability of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) from inception in 1938 through the 1983 edition. All editions inclusive of this period as well as all supplements for this time frame are now easily accessible online for the very first time in an image-based (PDF), searchable format. Access to historic Code of Federal Regulations content could not be easier! For those HeinOnline subscribers who may not be familiar with the CFR, the CFR is the codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register (also available in HeinOnline from its' inception in 1936) by the executive departments and agencies of the U.S. Federal Government. The CFR is divided into 50 titles that represent broad areas subject to U.S. Federal regulation. HeinOnline's CFR content is located within HeinOnline's Federal Register library collection ( http://heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=fedreg). Therefore, anyone subscribing to HeinOnline's Federal Register library has access to the new CFR content at this time. Currently, the 1938 through 1983 editions of the CFR in HeinOnline have been electronically indexed to the Book level. Additionally, content from 1938 through 1949, as well as 1977 through 1983 has been electronically indexed to the Part level. In future enhancements, all content will be electronically indexed to the Part level. The CFR content in HeinOnline consists of approximately 1250 books totaling nearly 780,000 pages. With the CFR release, HeinOnline has surpassed the 23 million page level (23.2 million to be more precise!). An overview video of the new CFR content may be accessed from the HeinOnline home page, or by going to this link: http://www.projectstreamer.com/users/wshein/cfr3/CFR3.html At the end of the video, a short series of questions are provided, which do not need to be submitted to us. We are merely providing this series of questions to further emphasize the new features and benefits of HeinOnline's CFR content. Many, many subscribers have been anticipating the CFR release in HeinOnline. Therefore, we hope you will submit comments, suggestions and questions to marketing at wshein.com. On behalf of everyone at William S. Hein & Co., Inc., thank you for the support you provide to our company and HeinOnline. We hope you enjoy access to the CFR content and other library modules available.
