Dear HeinOnline subscribers,

On Tuesday a proposed Constitutional amendment to allow Congress to prohibit desecration of the flag fell one vote short of approval by the U.S. Senate, an extremely close vote that left unresolved a long-running debate over whether the U.S. flag is a unique national symbol deserving of special legal standing.

After seeing the results of the vote, several of us at the Hein Company wondered about the content that HeinOnline contains in regards to this matter. Below I have provided just a few links to the hundreds of articles in HeinOnline related to the U.S. flag. Interestingly, quite a number of articles pre-date other online database content, so it appears that HeinOnline may be your sole online source for locating these historical articles.

Here is a small sampling of articles available in HeinOnline on the subject:

Again, the above represents just a small sampling of the hundreds of articles in HeinOnline on this controversial subject.

For those interested, in 1993 William S. Hein & Co., Inc. published, "The Flag and the Law. A Documentary History of the Treatment of the American Flag by the Supreme Court and Congress". At the suggestion of Roy Mersky of Tarlton Law Library, University of Texas School of Law, who at the time was the Hyder Centennial Professor of Law and Director of Research, compilers Marlyn Robinson and Christopher Simoni assembled a collection of judicial and congressional materials that span more than one hundred years. The opinions, briefs, statutes, and congressional materials in the set are arranged in chronological order.

Since the topic has one again taken "center stage", we are pleased to offer an exclusive discount to the first 15 HeinOnline subscribers that would like to purchase this special collection. The set, which consists of 3 volumes plus one binder of microfiche, is available for $295.00, a savings of $100.00 off the regular price. To take advantage of this special offer, or for more information about this collection, please contact me.
