Dear HeinOnline subscribers,

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to our second Bound
Volume Survey. Listed below are highlights of the survey, along with the
responses from the 2004 survey. As you can see, some attitudes are beginning
to change about how librarians are managing their collections, and also how
they are using services such as HeinOnline to get the most out of their
library budgets.

Below the statistics you will also find some general comments that were
received by respondents of this year's survey. Perhaps these comments are
echoed throughout your library, or if not, then they may generate some new
ideas within your library.

Thank you, once again, to all who took time out of their busy schedules to
respond. Please feel free to send any additional comments or questions to
b_jablonski at wshein.com.

Sincerely,

Brian Jablonski

Bound Volume Survey-August 2005

1) Has your library moved any of the bound volumes found in HeinOnline to
remote storage?

14% said that they have moved bound volumes to remote storage, compared to
17% in the 2004 survey. Perhaps this slightly lower number reflects the
broader customer type that subscribes to HeinOnline compared to 2004.

2) If not, do you have any plans to do so?

This year, only 47% of the respondents indicated that they did not have any
plans to do so, compared with 83% in 2004.

3) Has your library discarded any of the bound volumes of titles included in
HeinOnline?

18% said that they have discarded some bound volumes of titles included in
HeinOnline, compared to 23% in 2004.

4) If not, do you have plans to do so?

This year, only 48% of respondents said they did not have plans to discard
bound volumes of titles also found in HeinOnline, while a full 76% said the
same in the 2004 survey.

5) Has your library entered into a group remote storage project with other
HeinOnline participating institutions to consolidate your print collections,
given the availability of the titles in HeinOnline?

No one in this year's survey indicated that they had entered into such a
"partnership". The same was true in the 2004 survey.

6) Has your library discontinued binding recent issues as a result of your
HeinOnline access?

According to the 2005 results, nearly 25% of you have discontinued binding
your issues. This is up slightly from last year, when about 1/5th of you
were no longer binding your issues. In addition, 13% said they were
considering it, compared to no one in the 2004 survey.

7) Has your library developed, or made plans to develop, other cost or
shelf-space saving solutions as a result of your HeinOnline access?

Only 16% have developed, or have made plans to develop, such solutions,
according to this year's survey results. Last year, 30% indicated that they
had done so. However, according to this year's survey results, 13% are at
least considering it, while only 2% were considering it last year.

8) If your library has developed other cost or shelf-space saving solutions,
we would appreciate sharing these ideas with other HeinOnline subscribers.
Please list your solutions below, and let us know if we can share them with
other subscribers.

Some respondents gave concrete answers, while others mentioned that they do
have plans to develop cost and/or shelf-space saving solutions in the
future. Here are some of the responses received in this year's survey:

*	A) "We've discussed withdrawing multiple copies of bound volumes,
but have not done so at this time."

*	B) "We no longer allow our law students doing cite-checking for the
journals that we publish to take bound volumes to their library carrels.
Instead, they use HeinOnline on their laptops. This greatly reduces the mess
in the carrel area of the library."

*	C) "We have discarded all bound volumes that are included in
HeinOnline except in the following instances: We maintain hardcopy of the
past 5 years, Keep law reviews from prestigious law schools from 1980-, keep
law reviews from the law schools located in our state and the contiguous
states from 1980-"

*	D) "While we are deciding whether to discard certain titles that are
available through HeinOnline, we place them on the very top shelves of our
library. These shelves are hard to reach, even when standing on a stool, so
it is in effect archive storage."

*	E) "Wishes, not plans. Remote Storage turns out to be prohibitively
expensive, in a large part because the ABA requires that we be able to
provide retrieval within 24 hours. We need to work on the ABA to remove the
requirement for paper retrieval when the material is available online."

*	F) "Yes, we plan to dispose of many law reviews that we can access
on HeinOnline this month."

*	G) "Yes. The Law Library will be able to send 200,000 volumes to
off-site storage over the next two years, beginning in October 2005. We plan
to send the second bound copy of most titles located in HeinOnline. We will
not send the only bound copy."

*	H) "We are part of the OhioLink remote storage facilities, there is
a general recommendation that not more than three copies of a title be in
remote storage."

*	I) "No. If we're going to keep them, we need to keep them neatly."

*	J) "Yes - We no longer bind titles that are available on
HeinOnline."
