IRAQ:

'Chemical Ali' awaits execution -- Chemical ali will be hanged shortly
after the trial

Saddam Hussein's notorious hatchet man known as "Chemical Ali" is due to
be hanged shortly after his conviction for genocide and murder.

Ali Hassan al-Majid, Saddam's cousin, was an important powerbroker in
Iraq. He was nicknamed 'Chemical Ali' for his role in gas attacks on
Iranians and Iraqi Kurds.

Al-Majid and 14 other former regime officials are accused of crimes
against humanity.

He was supported by the west in his brutal oppression of the Kurds and
during the war with Iran. However, the West stopped its support when
Saddam led a military occupation of the oil rich Kuwait.

al-Majid has murdered thousands of people with chemical weapons.

Al-Majid's co defendants are accused of having overseen a bloodbath in
which up to 100,000 Iraqis were killed by Saddam's security forces.

Saddam's former vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was also hanged for
crimes against humanity on March 20, while the dictator's half-brother
Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti and Awad Ahmed al-Bandar, the ex-chief of Iraq's
Revolutionary Court, were all hanged on January 15.
